Sarawak pursues the development of semiconductor cluster
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan led Sarawak delegation to a meeting with X-FAB Silicon Foundries SE at Erfurt, Germany to discuss on the development of Semiconductor Cluster in the State.The meeting was attended by high powered X-FAB team led by Mr. Hans-Jurgen Straub, Member of the Board of Directors, Mr. Nobert Meyer VP Strategic Projects, Dr. Jens Kosch, Chief Technical Officer and Mr. Mario von Podewils, Fab Operation Manager.The meeting was very fruitful and X-FAB Silicon Foundries SE has pledged to support the Sarawak Government aspiration to develop Semiconductor Cluster in the State. Currently, X-FAB Sarawak has the largest manufacturing facilities in Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone among the X-FAB Group of companies namely in Belgium, France, Germany and USA. X-FAB Sarawak Sdn. Bhd currently employs more than 1,200 local Sarawakian in the high-tech jobs.According to Mr. Hans-Jurgen Straub X-FAB Sarawak Sdn. Bhd is in a good position to nurture the development of Semiconductor Cluster in the State because Sarawak has the right business ecosystem.Moreover, there are many Sarawakian students studying in Germany in various fields of engineering and X-FAB would be happy to engage these students as intern in their manufacturing plants and later become their employees in Sarawak.“X-FAB is a specialty foundry with a worldwide presence offering a comprehensive set of technologies and design IP to enable its customers to develop world leading products across different market segments.“With expertise in analog/mixed-signal IC production, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) and silicon carbide (SiC) we are the development and manufacturing partner for our customers. As such, the development of Semiconductor Cluster will have huge impact on Sarawak economy.“Silicon Valley being the most obvious, but in Europe, there are four key clusters around Leuven (Belgium), Dresden (Germany), Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and Grenoble (France.).“Between them, there are around 800 companies employing 150,000 skilled people. Wide ranging but technical, with a real need for the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines (STEM). The majority are skilled, highly paid technology jobs at graduate and postgraduate level”.The delegation comprises YB Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais Assistant Minister for International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development (MINTRED), YBhg. Datu Liaw Soon Eng, Permanent Secretary MINTRED and other MINTRED senior officials namely Mr. Kameri Haji Affandi, Mr. Lester Matthew and Tuan Haji Zukkarnain Haji Rosli.Accompanying them are Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Investment Consul, Frankfurt, Yusri Hasnan Chu Abu Bakar and Director MATRADE Sarawak, Leany Mokhtar.
